ফরমালিন কী?

ফরমালডিহাইড বা মিথান্যাল (Methanal) গ্যাসের ৪০% জলীয় দ্রবণকে ফরমালিন বলা হয়। ফরমালিন একটি কার্যকরী জীবাণুনাশক। প্রায় ৫০০০সে. তাপমাত্রায় উত্তপ্ত সিলভার অথবা কপার প্রভাবকের উপর দিয়ে মিথানলের বাষ্প ও বায়ুর মিশ্রণকে চালনা করলে মিথানল আংশিক জারিত হয়ে মিথান্যাল ও পানি বাষ্প উৎপন্ন হয়। ঐ মিথান্যাল গ্যাসকে পানিতে চালনা করলে উৎপন্ন হয় ৩০-৪০% জলীয় দ্রবণ বা ফরমালিন ।

ফরমালিনের বৈশিষ্ট্য/ধর্মঃ

ফরম্যালডিহাইড (H-CHO) এক ধরনের কার্বনাইল যৌগ। কার্বনাইল যৌগসমূহকে প্রধানত দুই শ্রেণীতে ভাগ করা যায়, যেমন: অ্যালডিহাইড ও কিটোন। দ্বিযোজী কার্বনাইল (>C=0) মূলকের সাথে ২টি হাইড্রোজেন পরমানু যুক্ত হয়ে যে যৌগ উৎপন্ন হয় সেটিই ফরমালডিহাইড।

ফরম্যালডিহাইড সাধারণ তাপমাত্রায় একটি গন্ধযুক্ত বর্ণহীন গ্যাস তবে এর ৪০% জলীয় দ্রবণের বাণিজ্যিক নাম হলো ফরমালিন। এটি একটি দাহ্য পদার্থ। এটি একটি তীব্র ঝাঁঝালো গন্ধযুক্ত রাসায়নিক পদার্থ। রাসায়নিক পদার্থ এবং একটি গুরম্নত্বপূর্ণ industrial chemical. ফরমালিনের বৈশিষ্ট ২ ভাগে ভাগ করা যায় : ১. ভৌত ধর্ম ও ২. রাসায়নিক ধর্ম।

ফরমালিনের ব্যবহারঃ

যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের Champion Encyclopedia এর তথ্যমতে, কেবল যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে-ই বছরে ৮.২ বিলিয়ন পাউন্ড এর অধিক ফরমালিন তৈরি হয় এবং বিশ্বব্যাপী এর বার্ষিক উৎপাদন ১৬ বিলিয়ন পাউন্ড এরও বেশি। বিশ্বব্যাপী মোট উৎপাদিত ফরম্যালডিহাইড এর ৬০ শতাংশ কাঠ এবং কনস্ট্রাকশন কারখানায় যেমন ইউরিয়া-ফরমালডিহাইড, ফেনল- ফরম্যালডিহাইড, মেলামাইন- ফরমালডিহাইড, গ্লুরেজিন এবং কঠিন কারক বা শক্ত কারক (stiffness) হিসাবে ব্যবহৃত হয়। ৩০ শতাংশ ফরমালিন chemical intermediate যেমন: ফেন্টাইরাইথ্রিটল, হেক্রামিথাইল ইনটিট্রামাইন, বিউটানিডিয়ল ইত্যাদি তৈরিতে ব্যবহৃত হয় যা দ্বারা অন্যান্য বাণিজ্যিক রাসায়নিক পদার্থ তৈরি হয়। ৭ শতাংশ ফরমালডিহাইড থার্মোপ্লাষ্টিক রেজিন উৎপাদনে ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং ২ শতাংশ পোশাক শিল্পে বা আবরণ (apparel) শিল্পে যেমন: পোশাক বা সার্ট সাদাকারক, ফিনিসার, শক্তকারক, চামড়ার ভাজ বা রেখা দূরকারক এবং মচমচে ভাব (crispness of appearance) তৈরির জন্য ব্যবহৃত হয়। ১ শতাংশ ফরমালডিহাইড প্রিজারভেটিভ এডিটিভ হিসাবে সাবান, লোশন, শ্যাম্পু তৈরির সময় ব্যবহৃত হয়। বিশ্বব্যাপী মৃত দেহ সংরক্ষণের জন্য সবচেয়ে গ্রহণযোগ্য উপকরণ হচ্ছে ফরমালিন। ধারণা করা হয় যে, ফরমালিন ১৮৯৯ সাল হতে মৃত মানবদেহ সংরক্ষণের জন্য ব্যবহৃত হচ্ছে। তবে মৃত দেহ সংরক্ষণে ফরমালিনের ব্যবহার ১ শতাংশেরও অনেক কম। এছাড়াও

• ফরম্যালডিহাইড পার্টিক্যাল বোর্ড, প্লাইউড, ফাইবার বোর্ড, আঠা, কাগজের কোটিং, স্থায়ী প্রেস ফেব্রিক ইত্যাদি তৈরিতে ব্যবহৃত হয়;
• এটি বাণিজ্যিক ছত্রাকনাশক (fungicide), জীবাণুনাশক (germicide) এবং ডিজ-ইনফেকট্যান্ট (disinfectant) হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়। মাছের প্রোটোজোয়া এবং ছত্রাকজণিত রোগের চিকিৎসায়ও ফরমালিন ব্যবহৃত হয়। চিংড়ি ও কার্প হ্যাচারীতে জীবানুনাশক হিসেবে ফরমালিন নির্ধারিত মাত্রায় ব্যবহার হয়।
• USA এর Food and Drug Administration ফরমালিনের ৩ ধরণের প্রোডাক্টকে পরজীবিনাশক এবং ছত্রাকনাশক হিসেবে US food fish aquaculture এ ব্যবহারের অনুমতি দিয়েছে;
• রসায়ন শিল্পে ফেনল-মিথান্যাল বা ফেনল-ফরম্যালডিহাইড প্লাস্টিক বা ব্যাকেলাইট নামক প্লাস্টিক ও ইফরিয়া- ফরম্যালডিহাইড প্লাস্টিক বা ফরমিকা তৈরিতে ব্যবহৃত হয়;
• আয়না প্রস্ত্ততিতে বিজারক হিসেবে, রঞ্জক দ্রব্যের শিল্পোৎপাদনে মিথান্যাল ব্যবহৃত হয়;
• ল্যাবরেটরীতে প্রিজারভেটিভ হিসেবে ফরমালিন ব্যবহৃত হয়।

মানব দেহে ফরমালিনের ক্ষতিকর প্রভাবঃ

ফরমালিন ইকোসিস্টেম এবং জনস্বাস্থ্যের জন্য সবচেয়ে ক্ষতিকর(worst 10%) যৌগের মধ্যে একটি। মৃত দেহ সংরক্ষণ ও এনাটমির বিষয়ে (০.৫-১.০ ppm ফরম্যালডিহাইড নিয়ে সপ্তাহে ১ দিন ৩ ঘন্টা কাজ করে) ১০ সপ্তাহ কাজ করার পর তাদের মধ্যে যে সমস্ত উপসর্গ দেখা গিয়েছে তা হলো- নাকের প্রদাহ, শ্বাস কষ্ট এবং চর্ম প্রদাহ (skin iritation) ইত্যাদি। দীর্ঘমেয়াদে ফরমালডিহাইডের সংস্পর্শে কাজ করলে রক্তের লিম্পোসাইট পরিবর্তন, নাসিকা টিস্যুতে মিউটেটিভ প্রভাব ইত্যাদি ঘটতে পারে। তবে স্বল্প সময় exposure এর কারণে এগুলো কাটিয়ে ওঠা যায় (recoverable)। কিন্তু long term/low dose এর ক্ষেত্রে স্থায়ী সমস্যা দেখা দেয়, এক্ষেত্রে তাৎক্ষণিক সমস্যা দেখা দেয় না।

Carcinogenicity: পৃথিবীর সমস্ত রাসায়নিক দ্রব্য নিয়ন্ত্রণকারী এজেন্সি ফরমালিনকে কারসিনোজেনিক হিসাবে শ্রেনীভূক্ত করেছে। ১৯৮৭ সালে US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ফরম্যালডিহাইড এর উচ্চ মাত্রায় অথবা দীর্ঘস্থায়ী exposure-কে probable human carcinogen হিসাবে শ্রেণীবিন্যাস করেছে। শিল্প শ্রমিকদের উপর পরিচালিত কিছু গবেষণায় দেখা যায় যে, ফরম্যালডিহাইডের সংস্পর্শে যারা কাজ করেন তাদের নাকের ক্যান্সার, ন্যাসোফেরিঞ্জিয়াল ক্যান্সার এবং লিউকেমিয়া হওয়ার প্রবণতা বেশি। ১৯৯৫ সালে International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) জানিয়েছে যে ফরম্যালডিহাইড একটি ‘Probable human carcinogen’। National Cancer Institute, USA এর একাধিক গবেষণায় প্রতীয়মাণ হয় যে এনাটমিস্ট এবং অ্যাম্বালমার (যারা মৃতদেহ সংরক্ষণের কাজ করে) পেশার যারা ফরমালিন নিয়ে কাজ করেন তারা সাধারণ জনগোষ্ঠীর তুলনায় লিউকেমিয়া এবং ব্রেন ক্যান্সারের উচ্চ ঝুঁকি মধ্যে রয়েছেন। ফরমালিন ফুসফুস ক্যান্সারের জন্যও দায়ী। তাছাড়া কিডনি রোগ দেখা দেওয়ার সম্ভাবনা রয়েছে। 

ফরমালিন চর্ম এলার্জি, শ্বসন সংবেদক এবং অ্যাজমা জাতীয় লক্ষণের জন্য দায়ী। বিভিন্ন গবেষণায় ফরম্যালডিহাইডকে জিন মিউটেশন (বংশ চরিত্র বাহকের পরিবর্তন) এর কারণ হিসেবে চিহ্নিত করা হয়েছে।

গর্ভাবস্থা (pregnency) এবং ফরমালিন: গর্ভবতী মহিলাদের ফরমালিন নিয়ে কাজ করা সম্পূর্ণ নিষিদ্ধ। নিতান্তই যদি পেশা জণিত কারণে কাজ করতে হয় তবে formaldehyde respirator ব্যবহার করে কাজ করার পরামর্শ প্রদান করা হয়েছে। 

ক্ষতিকর প্রভাব: মহিলাদের ক্ষেত্রে ভ্রুণের অস্বাভাবিকতা, গর্ভপাত, গর্ভস্রাভ, প্রজনন ক্ষমতা হ্রাস এবং প্রসব জণিত অন্যান্য জটিলতা দেখা দেয়। 

মাছে বা ফলে বা অন্য কোন খাদ্যদ্রব্যে ফরমালিনের অপব্যবহার একটি অতিসম্প্রতি একটি বিচ্ছিন্ন ঘটনা বিধায় এ বিষয়ে বিস্তারিত গবেষণালব্ধ তথ্য পাওয়া যায়নি। তাছাড়া ভোক্তাশ্রেণীর মধ্যে কে বা কারা প্রতিনিয়ত ফরমালিনযুক্ত খাবার খাচ্ছে এ বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত করা খুবই দূরহ ব্যাপার। তবে, উপরের আলোচনা হতে প্রতিয়মাণ হয় যে স্বল্প মেয়াদে উচ্চ মাত্রায় অথবা দীর্ঘ মেয়াদে নিমণ মাত্রায়ও ফরমালিন মিশ্রিত খাদ্য গ্রহণের কারণে মানুষ উল্লিখিত স্বাস্থ্য ঝুকিসমূহের সম্মুখিন হতে পারে। অধিকন্তু উল্লিখিত স্বাস্থ্য ঝুঁকিসমূহের পাশাপাশি ফরমালিন মিশ্রিত খাদ্য গ্রহণের কারণে মানুষ ডাইজেস্টিভ সিস্টেম এর নানাবিধ জটিলতা বা গেস্ট্রো-ইন্টেস্টাইনাল ক্যান্সারসহ অন্যান্য জটিলতায় ভুগতে পারে।
